The sovereign of imagination and the crown jewel of logic, Raghunatha Shiromani, in his immortal work Padārthatattvanirūpaṇa, analyzed and established the doctrine of categories (padārthatattva) with the brilliance of an independent philosophical genius. A close and profound study of the text reveals that, among the various ontological doctrines formulated by the ancient philosophers of the Nyāya and Vaiśeṣika systems through extensive inquiry, Raghunatha accepted only those views that satisfied the rigorous standards of his subtle intellect and irrefutable logic. Conversely, those traditional conclusions that appeared to him logically weak or philosophically untenable were boldly refuted, even if they had long been upheld within the established tradition. In their place, he firmly articulated and defended his own independent, coherent, and carefully reasoned positions. Padārthatattvanirūpaṇa stands as a jewel among Raghunatha’s works. The treatise is systematically structured and firmly grounded upon the harmonious integration of valid means of knowledge (pramāṇa) and logical reasoning (tarka). Shiromani was a philosopher of mature intellect who possessed unwavering confidence in his own intellectual and analytical powers. In this work, his innovative imagination, penetrating analytical capacity, and distinctive philosophical originality often expressed in contrast to earlier authorities reach their fullest expression. His fresh perspective infused the Navya-Nyāya community with renewed vigor and creative enthusiasm. The renowned logicians of Nabadwip, inspired by his example, devoted themselves to the subtle formulation and systematic recording of ever-new theories and arguments. In the present research paper, a sincere attempt has been made to offer a concise yet focused discussion, in the light of Padārthatattvanirūpaṇa, of certain qualities (guṇa) such as colour and taste (rūpa, rasa, etc.), as well as separateness/distinctness (pṛthaktva), remoteness (paratva), and nearness/ proximity (aparatva). | ||
