Dr. Nabanita Barman, Independent Research Scholar, Nadia, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT
Literature is the best example of humans’ creative thinking. Literature acts as a mirror of society where writers reflect the society of contemporary time. In portraying the reality of the society, literature often employs proverbs. Proverbs are a unique element of practical life that expresses the various emotions and experiences of people’s day to day lives in a very eloquent way. Although, originally an element of oral literature, Proverbs endow written literature with sharpness of language and sarcasm of criticism through its bright presence. This feature helps in increasing the attractiveness and liveliness of the writing. The use of proverbs is also noteworthy in various aspects of the rich repertoire of Assamese literature. The present article sheds light on the practical aspect of proverbs in short stories and novels of selected Assamese writers. In this research article the topic of proverbs has been discussed in stories such as ‘Bidrohini’ written by Lakshmidhar Sharma, ‘Sanskar’ written by Mamoni Roysham Goswami, ‘Sakha Damodar’ written by Lakshminandan Bara and ‘Mone Mane’ written by Sri Sneha Devi. The topic of proverbs has been raised in Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya’s novel ‘Mrityunjay’ and Nabakanta Barua’s novel ‘Kakadeutar Haar’. Proverbs can give expression to various human experiences that cannot be put into words otherwise and people often apply proverbs in different situations in order to maintain the brevity and the sharpness of speech. Stories and novels are written based on human experiences and various elements of the real world. That is why proverbs are used in various literary elements with ease. The analysis of the Assamese short stories and novels mentioned earlier reveals the context of the use of proverbs in Assamese literature. Apart from the short stories and novels mentioned in the article, the employment of proverbs can also be seen in other stories and novels, which is a large field of study.
