The Theme of Women in Mahakāl in the Light of Feminine Consciousness: Poems of Mallika Sengupta
Dr. Rezaul Islam
, Asst. Prof, Dept. of Bengali, Bhairab Ganguly College, Kolkata, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT
Mallika Sengupta's poetry highlights the struggles of marginalized and neglected women in a patriarchal society. She uses mythological and historical female figures such as Draupadi, Sita, Ganga, Kunti, and Khana, as well as contemporary women like Medha Patekar, Shah Bano, and Malati Mudi, as subjects in her poems. The poet breaks down conventional myths and portrays these women as rebellious, brave, and independent.

In her writing, these characters not only protest the injustices done to them but also demand their rights as ‘human beings’ equal to men. Mallika's poetry is a feminist manifesto, vocal against the oppression of women and a strong message for women's empowerment. She believes that every woman possesses the strength of the ten-armed Durga, which is enough to live life on her own terms.

Over time, these women have become symbols of the independent woman of the twenty-first century. These female characters find new life through Mallika's pen, and through their self-expression, the poet proves that the stream of women's struggle has been flowing in the same way for thousands of years. This reflection of a rebellious spirit is the core success of Mallika Sengupta's poetry.
