Lower-Class Consciousness in Selected
Short Stories of Narayan Gangopadhyay: An Analytical Reading Rajarshi Mohanta, Asst. Prof, Kaliganj Pioneer College, Sribhumi, Assam, India
ABSTRACT | ||
Narayan
Gangopadhyay is an unforgettable name in post-Tagore Bengali literature. This
distinctive storyteller of the twentieth century shone like a radiant star in
the realm of Bengali literature. Among the writers whose pens vividly portrayed
the decaying Bengali society of the mid-twentieth century, Narayan Gangopadhyay
holds a prominent place alongside Narendra Nath Mitra, Nabendu Ghosh, Mahasweta
Devi, and others. During and after the Second World War, Narayan Gangopadhyay
enriched Bengali literature with his realistic perspective. His short stories,
in particular, reflect the contemporary real-world context, the unrest of the
time, and the ideals of life. Narayan Gangopadhya’y works include 14
collections of short stories. He was not merely a popular fiction writer; he
was also a great artist who represented an entire era. His true literary
development took place against the backdrop of war and famine. His individual
voice continuously echoed the hopes and aspirations, sorrows and agonies of an
entire era. The disrupted Bengali life
during the famine and World War II, the decline of human values, black
marketeering, Partition, communal riots, the refugee crisis — all these tragic
real-life images were vividly depicted in his stories.
Narayan
Gangopadhyay was a believer in Marxist philosophy. His short stories repeatedly
highlight the struggles of the voiceless section of Indian society. Just as he
sought to awaken the exploited, deprived, and marginalized working class of
society. He also highlighted the various crises faced by these people in his
short stories. Particularly, he portrayed the lives of the lower classes with a
realistic and insightful perspective. His short stories silently bear witness
to the exploitation of the lower-class people by the wealthy elites,
moneylenders, and custodians of the law.
