A Woman’s Life Changes in a Moment:
Mahasweta Devi’s Novel ‘Every Fifty-Four Minutes’ Anasua Kundu, Research Scholar, Dept. of Bengali, University of Kalyani, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT | ||
Almost
all women writers have spoken out about crimes committed against women. But
before 20th century they mostly talked about love, marriage, widowhood and
domestic violence. After enduring domestic violence for a long time, women also
preferred to remain silent and they become almost like domestic animals. In
cases of sexual violence against them, the victims kept quiet for fear of
losing their honor. From
the second half of the 20th century, the level of sexual assault on women
increased many times due to the movement out of the house. Mahasweta Devi’s
work is a powerful exploration of social justice, women’s rights, and the
struggles of marginalized communities. She sheds light on the harsh realities
of domestic violence, sexual assault and other forms of violence faced by
women. The novel Every Fifty-Four Minutes is a shining example of how a woman’s
life changes in an instant, centered around a rape.
