Rebellious Characters in the Short Stories of Manik Bandopadhyay Dr. Supriya Das, Associate Professor, Department of Bengali, Ram Thakur College, Tripura, India Dr. Arupa Chakraborty, PG Faculty, Department of Bengali, Maharaja Bir Bikram College, Tripura, India | ||
ABSTRACT | ||
The stories of Manik Bandopadhyay prominently
feature protest-oriented characters. Influenced by the post-Tagore modern
literary movements like Kallol, Kalikalam, and Pragati, he portrayed the
struggles of peasants, workers, and labourers from the lower strata of society
with stark realism. Set against the backdrop of World War II, the Bengal Famine
of 1943, and the Tebhaga Movement of 1946, stories such as Dushashaniya, Dhan,
Haraner Natjamai, and Chhoto Bakulpurer Jatri depict the united resistance of
common people against exploitation. These narratives show how poor and
uneducated peasants and workers gradually became conscious of their rights and
stood up against landlords and authorities. Collective protest, rather than
individual resistance, emerges as the central theme, making these stories
important historical documents of a crisis-ridden era.
