ABSTRACT | ||
Madhusudan Dutta was a milestone in the history
of Bengali literature and also a pioneer of many genres in Bengali literature.
He was a successful playwright who wrote both historical tragedies and farces.
He wrote in many poetic forms, including narrative, epic, epistle, didactic
poems and lyrical poetry demonstrating his versatility. Madhusudan Dutta also
experimented with meter. Inspired by the western blank verse, he introduced
‘Amitrakkhor Chhando’ in Bengali poetry along with sonnet, payar and lachari. Madhsudan
wrote and translated works into English. He assimilated and imbibed different
styles of western literature and presented them in the traditional way in
bengali. He was a true polyglot. Payar was one of the main strengths of his
poetry. He also experimented with words in many ways. Madhusudan Dutta was
enlightened by the Bengal Renaissance of the 19th century, and his characters
also reflect influences from that period. He had to develop the dialogues for
the characters of his plays considering the vast variety of their
personalities, social class, moral stands, choice of words and dictions.
Therefore, it was necessary for him to articulate his language with precision.
He carefully selected each word to ensure that the dialogue suited the spirit
and emotion of the character and genre. This essay will elaborate the
linguistic features of his writings mentioned above. | ||
