Folk Culture and Tribal Society: A Mirror of Life Tamal Adak, Independent Research Scholar, Nadia, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT | ||
Folk culture is a reflection of the folk people; all aspects of the customs, norms, reforms, beliefs, and life practices of folk society are integral parts of folk culture. The Indian subcontinent is a nation-state formed through a synthesis of art, culture, and diversity, where tribal society has emerged as an inseparable component. Generally, in the context of the Indian social system, folk culture carries forward a stream of tradition that includes the lifestyle of common people, their rituals and practices, religious and social beliefs, customs, arts, and entertainment, on the basis of which culture is formed. On the other hand, the communities that have developed within the social system around distinct cultural identities, using religious beliefs as a unifying force, are identified as tribal societies. In this essay, I have attempted to present a brief discussion on folk culture and the tribal social system, analyzing various aspects of both folk culture and tribal society. This discussion is actively connected with issues such as the historical background of the emergence of folk society, the continuity of the tribal past, colonialism, Sanskritization, and socio-political factors. In the twenty-first century, it is observed that the traditions of folk culture and the continuity of tribal society are, in many places, gradually fading, while the framework of global social structures and the influence of modernization are gaining prominence. It is humanity itself that must discover ways to break free from this Western shadow and its constraints. On the foundation of this humanistic cultural awakening, people will be able to revive their eternal life traditions and cherished cultural heritage, which will become a mirror of life for all humankind.
