It is not known exactly
who founded the Baul community or how it originated. The Baul philosophy was established around the
16th century. The Bauls are the result of Vaishnavism and Sufi influence in
Bengal since the Muslim rule. The Bauls were born in Bengal. Baul is generally
become popular by people who are not formally educated or who are illiterate.
UNESCO included Baul songs in the Representative List of the Intangible
Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008. The best example of the philosophical
knowledge hidden in Baul songs is Lalon's Baul song. Both Hindu and Muslim
communities belong to this Baul community. Baul songs are passed down orally through
the 'Guru Parampara'. The Bauls kept their philosophy secret. They learn this
philosophy from their ‘Guru’. They wear saffron or black robes(‘Alkhalla’),
a garland of seeds around their necks, their hair tied high, a beard on their
face and a ‘Ekatara’ in their hands. They roam from one place to another
singing songs. Humanism is their main message. Famous Baul saints include Lalon
Fakir, Hason Raja, Shitalang Fakir, Ponja Shah. Among them, Lalon Fakir is
considered the greatest Baul. He composed many songs in his long life. So far,
five hundred and fifty songs have been found. Lalon was a rare personality. He
was a saint, singer, and poet all at once. He is still discussed and respected
in our society. He did not follow Vedic rituals or worldly customs. Many people used to call Lalon a Sufi. He never identified
himself as a Sufi. However, Sufi
influence is evident in his songs. Lalon never called himself a Baul anywhere. He
introduced himself as a 'Fakir'. In this musical genre, Lalon Fakir was
talented and at the top of all in terms of depth and artistic subtlety.
Analyzing Lalon songs, it can be understood that, like Sufi doctrine, Lalon
Fakir's songs feature humanism, Guruism or Murshidism, non-scriptural spiritual practices, criticism of the formal
path, opposition to the Sharia approach, etc. This article examines the above issue in
detail. | ||
