ABSTRACT | ||
The Arthashastra of Kautilya is not only a treatise on Indian political thought and diplomacy but also a significant documentation of advanced agricultural science. This study analyses Kautilya’s scientific observations on agriculture during the Maurya period and presents a comparative perspective with modern agricultural practices. The role of the Sitadhyaksha as the administrative head of agriculture highlights systematic approaches to seed preservation, irrigation management, and diversified farming. Detailed strategies regarding rainfall measurement, seasonal planning, soil-based crop selection, and harvesting techniques reflect a rational and scientific agricultural framework. Practices such as seed purification and the use of organic fertilizers indicate early principles of sustainable agriculture. In the context of contemporary challenges such as climate change, soil degradation, and food scarcity, Kautilya’s agricultural vision remains highly relevant. Above all, he recognised an economic framework similar to the modern-day performance-based incentive system for workers. Thus, the agricultural system described in the Arthashastra may be regarded as a well-structured foundation of modern agricultural science. | ||
