The Psychology of Women in the Works of Kalidasa
Sipra Pal, Research Scholar, Department of Sanskrit, Sido Kanhu Murmu University, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT
Kalidasa is universally regarded as one of the greatest poets and dramatists of Sanskrit literature. His works represent the highest achievement of classical Sanskrit poetry in terms of beauty, imagination, and philosophical depth. Because of his extraordinary poetic genius, Kalidasa is often described as the “ever-luminous star” in the vast sky of Sanskrit literary tradition. The exact period of Kalidasa remains uncertain, but many scholars believe that he flourished during the Gupta age, often called the golden age of Indian culture and literature. His literary creations display an extraordinary command over language, refined aesthetic sensibility, and deep understanding of human emotions and nature.
Kalidasa’s major works include the celebrated plays Abhijnanasakuntalam, Malavikagnimitram, and Vikramorvasiyam. Among his poetic compositions, Raghuvamsa and Kumarasambhava are regarded as magnificent mahakavyas, while Meghaduta and Ritusamhara are lyrical masterpieces. These works demonstrate his unique ability to blend poetic imagination with natural beauty and human sentiment. One of the most remarkable features of Kalidasa’s poetry is his vivid description of nature. In his works, nature is not merely a background but an active participant in human emotions. His descriptions of seasons, landscapes, clouds, rivers, and mountains are filled with sensitivity and artistic brilliance. Another significant aspect of his poetry is the delicate portrayal of love, devotion, separation, and longing, which makes his works deeply appealing to readers across ages.
Kalidasa also shows a profound understanding of Indian culture, mythology, and philosophical thought. His works harmoniously combine aesthetic beauty with moral and spiritual ideals. The influence of Kalidasa extends far beyond India; his play Abhijnanasakuntalam was translated into several European languages and greatly admired by Western scholars and poets.
Thus, Kalidasa stands as an immortal poet whose works continue to illuminate the literary world with timeless beauty and universal human values.
