ABSTRACT
‘Kalo Pathore Buddho’ by Jhareswar Chattopadhyay is a profound and intellectually rich collection of contemporary Bengali short stories. The ten stories included in this volume artistically portray the multifaceted realities of life. They reflect the everyday struggles of middle-class and marginalized people, familial tensions, generational conflicts, and the subtle impacts of social change. In some stories, there is a clash of education and values; in others, silent breakdowns in relationships and the undercurrents of emotion are explored. Elsewhere, issues of displacement and existential crisis reveal deeper truths about human life.
The title story ‘Kalo Pathore Buddho’ carries a strong symbolic meaning. ‘Buddha’ represents knowledge, liberation, and peace, while the ‘black stone’ signifies the darkness, rigidity, and suffering within human hearts. Darkness resides within human beings, yet within that same space lies the potential for light. It is through this duality that the true essence of humanity is formed.
The stories vividly depict the struggles of ordinary people, poverty, deprivation, and small moments of joy. The author uses simple and lucid language to craft characters in such a way that readers can easily connect with them. There is no exaggeration or artificial dramatization; rather, the deeper significance of life is revealed through its natural flow. This article attempts to demonstrate, based on the ten stories in the collection, how these narratives become a profound exploration of the human psyche and social reality, inspiring readers to think deeply and enrich their sense of humanity.
