Haribhushan Pal's Short Stories: A Mirror of a Turbulent Time Dipak Dey, Guest Lecturer, Department of Bengali, Ramthakur College, Agartala, Tripura, India | ||
ABSTRACT | ||
The short
stories of Haribhushan Pal serve as a powerful mirror of the turbulent
socio-political history of Tripura in the twentieth century. Born in 1946,
Haribhushan Pal witnessed crucial historical events such as Partition, refugee
influx, ethnic conflicts, insurgency, political unrest, and the communal riots
of 1980, all of which deeply influenced his literary consciousness. His stories
portray the struggles, anxieties, and emotional trauma of ordinary people
caught in the crisis of time and history. Through realistic narration and
humanistic insight, Pal depicts the changing relationship between Bengali
refugees and indigenous tribal communities, the erosion of communal harmony,
and the devastating effects of violence and separatism. Stories like 'Nanda
Telir Shishi Botol', '', and 'Nihoter Shankhya Sat' reveal the painful
realities of displacement, border politics, communal hatred, terrorism, and
moral degeneration within society. Pal’s fiction not only documents historical
experiences but also raises questions about humanity, coexistence, and social
responsibility. His portrayal of uprooted refugees, victimized women, and
marginalized tribal communities reflects deep compassion and social awareness.
At the same time, his narratives expose the selfishness, indifference, and
hypocrisy of modern civilized society. Haribhushan Pal transforms the regional
experiences of Tripura into universal human concerns. His stories become living
documents of a disturbed era, combining social realism with artistic sensitivity.
Thus, his short fiction occupies a significant place in the tradition of
Bengali literature of Tripura as a literary testimony of conflict, suffering,
resistance, and the enduring aspiration for peace and harmony.
