A Realistic Mirror of Rural Farmers and Political Consciousness in the Stories of Gunamoy Manna Sonali Bhumij, Assistant Professor, Department of Bengali, Hijli College, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT | ||
Gunamay Manna was one of the
prominent fiction writers of the Bengal literature during the latter half of the 20th
century. He is the storyteller of the turbulent era of a newly independent
Bengal. His artwork has emerged against this backdrop. Throughout his entire
body of literary work, he has portrayed the problem-ridden lives of the
village’s ordinary laborers, farmers, and wage earners. The impact fervor of
that era is reflected in his entire body of work. A selection of his stories
has been discussed in this essay. The stories ‘Abhigyan’ and ‘Durabarti’
present a poignant portrayal of the partition. The stories ‘Sahabasthan’,
‘kakima’ and ‘Blood Pressure’ provide an extensive account of the profound
impact that ‘Operation Barga’ had on sharecroppers during that era. Contemporary
agrarian issues accelerated political movements. Political party conflicts
centering on the agrarian issues of that era, radical reforms in the
agricultural system, movements for raising the minimum wages sharecropping
rights – all are masterfully depicted in his stories.
