ABSTRACT
The people situated at the lower strata of the social pyramid, who have long been identified as timid and cowardly, lacking independent thought and consciousness, and sustained by the leftovers of society, are reimagined by Utpal Dutt in his play with a different identity. He places in their voices a new language of protest. Instead of marching in the traditional procession of silence, they transform history and establish themselves as counterparts to the upper classes. “Ferari Fauj” narrates the story of such a marginal community, who, under British-ruled India, succeeded in shedding the stigma of cowardice. They became capable of standing upright with dignity and voicing resistance. Those individuals who usually dissolve into the crowd without any distinct identity are presented in the play with a unique and powerful dimension.
