Propagation of Divine Glory or the Eternal Struggle for Women’s Self-Establishment: In the Context of the Mangal-Kavya Tradition Beauty Rudra, Research Scholar, Department of Bengali, University of Burdwan, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT | ||
This paper explores the representation of women’s self-assertion in Bengali Mangal-Kavya within a predominantly patriarchal social framework. While these medieval texts are often interpreted as narratives glorifying deities, a deeper reading reveals the persistent struggle of female characters for identity, dignity, and recognition. Through an analysis of texts such as Manasamangal, Chandimangal, Dharmamangal, and Annadamangal, the study highlights how figures like Manasa, Behula, Chandi, and others embody resistance against social, familial, and religious constraints. These women challenge established norms, assert autonomy, and negotiate power within restrictive structures. The paper situates these narratives within the socio-political context of medieval Bengal, marked by religious transitions and social stratification. It argues that beneath the veneer of divine glorification lies a discourse of gendered agency and empowerment. Thus, Mangal-Kavya becomes a significant literary site for understanding early expressions of women’s selfhood and resistance in Bengali literature.
