India and it’s distinct regions
endured a prolonged period of subjugation under different foreign invaders
throughout history. Today’s India stands as a testament to a blood stained
past, built on the ultimate sacrifice of common masses. Among all the invaders,
India was mostly wounded by the British. For two hundred years, India faced
Iron fisted dominance of the British. They sowed the seed of communal hatred
which acted like a slow poison in the society. When people could no longer bear
the brutal dominance, they revolted against the government, which resulted in
the deaths of hundreds of thousands common innocent Indians. After the second
world war the British came under immense pressure and agreed to India’s
Independence. To protect their own interest, they divided India in two weaker
and dependent nations. India received it’s Independence at the cost of
countless lives, immense bloodshed and communal violence. The journey of
independent India was not easy as undivided India was divided into two
different nations on the basis of religion. The leaders thought that the
communal violence will stop after the partition but the result was more
devastating. The writers of the subcontinent captured the traumatic history
translating the agony and plight of the people into powerful narratives. Bengali
literature is enriched with poetry, short stories, fiction and drama depicting
the trauma of the riots and partition. This paper offers a critical analysis of
selected short stories of saadat Hasan Manto’s ‘Khodar Kasam’ and Kritya’,
Samaresh Basu’s ‘Adab’; Jiban Sarkar’s ‘Katatar’, It can be seen in the stories
that we are analyzing how partition and communal violence leading to a
catastrophic humanitarian crisis. In
this paper, we intend to analyze the deep psychological trauma and plight of
the masses during partition.
