Chheratar: An Alternative Interpretation Behind the Scripture
Dr. Kankan Dutta, SACT, Department of Bengali, Samsi College, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT
Tulsi Lahiri’s play Chheratar (The Torn String) is set against the backdrop of a contemporary famine. In the drama, the love between Rahim and Fuljan gradually becomes helpless amid the devastating famine, and the artistic portrayal vividly presents how their attempts to resist this helplessness ultimately prove futile. The play highlights how the famine intensifies the familial crisis of Rahim and Fuljan.
In Chheratar, both scripture and love are distinctly present. Due to ignorance of religious law, a storm descends upon their love; yet that very love does not remain confined within scriptural boundaries. Even while acknowledging scripture, it blossoms with great intensity. The love between Rahim and Fuljan is marked by crisis, conflict, and emotional oscillation. They had been living a peaceful married life, but rural exploitation combined with a terrible famine devastates their household.
Out of ignorance regarding religious injunctions, Rahim mistakenly divorces Fuljan by pronouncing talaq. However, bound by deep affection, he cannot endure the separation from her. Ultimately, he embraces death. In the lives of Rahim and Fuljan, love emerges as an innovative interpretation beyond the rigid confines of scripture.
