Bonophul
played a significant role in the development of the Bengali short story by
portraying the complexities of the human psyche and social reality within a
remarkably concise narrative framework. His short stories vividly depict the
multifaceted nature of human life, psychological complexities, social
inequality, moral dilemmas, love, selfishness, satire, and the harsh realities
of existence through a restrained and suggestive style of expression. The
present research paper attempts to analyse the multifaceted dimensions of human
life through a study of Bonophul’s selected short stories. The primary
objective of this study is to examine how the author artistically represents
the interrelationship among human behaviour, social position, and the surrounding
socio-cultural realities. Although the characters in his stories are shaped by
social conventions, economic conditions, and personal experiences, they possess
distinct psychological identities that are convincingly developed. His
restrained language, suggestive narrative technique, and insightful
characterization impart profound significance to his stories. Despite their
brevity, each of Bonophul’s short stories conveys a meaningful message and
concludes with an element of surprise. This study seeks to provide a
comprehensive understanding of the distinctive characteristics of
characterisation in Bonophul’s short stories as well as his unique contribution
to the tradition of the Bengali short story.
