During the period of India’s freedom movement,
many writers emerged, among whom Assamese fiction writer Birendra Kumar
Bhattacharya holds a special place of honor. He was simultaneously a poet,
storyteller, playwright, essayist, and novelist. His novels gained immense
popularity among readers. His life was full of diverse activities. Apart from
literary pursuits, he also worked as a journalist and editor. For his
livelihood, he traveled to different regions of Assam, and through his
writings, he vividly portrayed the struggles and problems of common people.
These struggles and problems found deep reflection in his novels.
In discussing the novel ‘Iaruingam’ in brief, on
the one hand, the economic, social, and political oppression of the
marginalized classes will be highlighted on the other hand, the characters of
the novel, rising above all inferiority complexes, emerge as dignified human
beings through the joy of self-respect. An attempt will be made to bring forth
these aspects in the main discussion. | ||
