Seeing the Ocean in a Drop: Selected Short Stories of Banaphul
Sk Samirul Islam, Research scholar, University of Calcutta, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT
Banaphul is a distinguished figure in Bengali literature. He made significant contributions to the genre of the short story. A defining characteristic of his short fiction is his ability to convey profound resonance within a remarkably concise scope; by eschewing superfluous elaboration, he compels the reader to engage in deep reflection. Without explicitly stating anything directly, he employs subtle cues across just a few lines to convey a wealth of meaning, thereby illuminating some of the profound truths of life. For instance, in his story 'Nimgaachh' by depicting the utility—as well as the subsequent neglect—of a neem tree, he poignantly highlights the exploitation and helplessness faced by housewives within our society. Another short story is 'Chhotolok'. Through a brief conversation between just two characters, this story portrays an entire society—a society in which the powerful have ceaselessly looked down upon the weak, treated them with condescension, and deemed them 'chhotolok.' The narrative conveys the profound insight that those whom society labels as 'chhotolok' actually possess a sense of self-respect and are, in reality, not 'lowly' at all. The story ‘Budhni’ portrays the dynamics of marital relationships—alongside scenes of their cruelty—within a primitive, forest-dwelling hill tribe. In the story ‘Jagrata Devata,’ the author has masterfully depicted the dire consequences of blind superstition. Indeed, the manner in which Banaphul brings to life the diverse and harsh realities of existence within the concise scope of his short stories constitutes a feat of such distinction that it is achievable only by him.
