Bibhutibhushan’s Chander Pahar:
Through the Lens of Geography Soumya Ghosh, Research Scholar, Dept. of Bengali, Visva-Bharati, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT | ||
‘Chander
Pahar’ of Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay is not only an ‘adventure-literature’.
The topic of Geography has gained great importance here in two ways: Directly
and Indirectly. The map of Africa, tribes,mysteries are all part of direct
geography. In the context of indirect geography, there is a sense of
existentialism. ‘‘Chander Pahar’’ transcends of Direct geography and Indirect
geography and explores an abstract geography. This view of geography does not
match the view of colonialism. Bibhutibhushan has tried to reach at this
through an existential opposition. Here, ‘Abstract geography’ deals with
'possibility', myth, deviations from reality. Bibhutibhushan has therefore paid
off loans of colonialism through this ‘Abstract Geography’ in ‘chander Pahar'.
There has also been a change in the thinking of Geography. Geography has been reconstructed through the
conflict of essence. Hero of this novel has followed, rejected and then
constructed geography.
