The Contribution of Women to the Bhakti Movement in Medieval India
Bithi Das, Independent Research Scholar, West Bengal, India

ABSTRACT
The main theme of the Bhakti Movement that emerged in India in the medieval period, was to attain liberation or salvation through devotion. Many saint gurus preached love and devotion through their bhajans and kirtans during this time. Women saints also contributed equally to the spread of this movement. Some of such notable women saint’s are Karaikkal Ammaiyar, Andal and Akka Mahadevi from South India, Lal Ded of Kashmir, Mirabai of Rajasthan, Gangasati of Gujrat, Muktabai, Janabai and Bihanabai from Maharastra, Jhanva Devi, Sita Devi, Hemalata Devi from West Bengal etc. However no such attempt has been made to uphold their biographies and writings in contemporary times. That is why many women saints may have remained in the shadow of History. Each of them is an outstanding devotee who has renounced everything and became a Goddess. Besides, they have played an important role in the history of Bhakti. In this movement, devotion means complete surrender at the feet of God and these women have fulfilled it by expressing self-sacrifice and deep love for God. Some of them have accepted God as their father, some as their husband and some as their friend. In their lives, some have played the role of a supreme devotee, some a renunciative saint, some a worldly devotee and some a guru. They have portrayed each role skillfully and have proven that everybody can meet God. Some of them are devotees of God with attributes and some are the devotees of the attributeless God but the conditions for walking on both paths are the same. Only a simple, honest and pure heart can attain the Supreme Soul through detachment and surrender. Their bhajans, kirtans and compositions are notable in this regard.
