ABSTRACT | ||
The relationship between literature and cinema is centuries-old. In the Bengali language too, many legendary directors have taken narratives from literature and adapted them into films. Ritwik Ghatak made the film 'Bari Theke Paliye' in 1959 based on the novel by Shibram Chakraborty. Shibram's novel was simple plot-driven narrative written for children. It also featured autobiographical elements and contemporary imagery. But when Ghatak made the film, it created a deeper resonance. In this film, Ritwik Ghatak, through the eyes of Kanchan, portrays the reality of post-partition Kolkata, while also using the multidimensional connotation of 'home' showing numerous homeless characters. This article attempts to explore the relationship between literature and cinema through an analysis of the works of Shibram and Ritwik. | ||
