Nature Consciousness and Modern Perspectives in Bani Basu's Mahabharata Series of Novels
Pranojit Sarkar, Research Scholar, Cotton University, Assam, India
ABSTRACT
The Mahabharata has been enriching Bengali literature in various ways for ages. There is an eternal quality within the tale of the Mahabharata that attracts writers of every era. In the novels belonging to her Mahabharata series, novelist Bani Basu has not only reconstructed the narrative of the Mahabharata but has also crafted the characters from the perspective of the modern era. In this reconstruction, she has prioritized modern logic and scientific consciousness.Beyond reconstructing the narrative and characterization, Bani Basu’s novels also portray a devastated picture of modern social life. To reflect this image, she highlights the destructive nature of civilization beneath the backdrop of nature in the Mahabharata. In portraying this aspect, she gives importance to modern logic and contemporary circumstances. She demonstrates how, in the era of globalization, human beings continuously destroy nature to satisfy their greed. In this drive to bring nature under human control, nature's pure essence is being destroyed. In Bani Basu's novels, behind the characters 'Ganga' and 'Kalindi', the pure, flowing form of rivers is depicted, alongside a description of how rivers are losing their true identity at the hands of modern civilization. Furthermore, as an indication of the destruction of forests in the present era, she narrates the story of the burning of the 'Khandava Forest'. In discussing these aspects of environmental consciousness within the Mahabharata narrative, Bani Basu prioritizes modern reasoning. The essay titled "Environmental Consciousness in Bani Basu's Mahabharata Series Novels" will present a research-oriented discussion on these subjects.
