Crimes of the Thuggees in Colonial India: William Henry Sleeman’s Account and a Criminological Analysis Kundan Chakraborty, Independent Research Scholar, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT | ||
This study examines the criminality of Thuggee in colonial India through a critical and criminological reading of administrative narratives. It analyzes how the British administration represented Thugs as a mysterious and organized community of killers and portrayed their suppression as a significant achievement of colonial governance. By interrogating these narratives, the paper questions their evidentiary validity and explores the ways in which crime was conceptualized, constructed, and institutionalized within colonial discourse. The study seeks to reassess the idea of Thuggee beyond conventional historiography and to reinterpret it as a product of power, knowledge, and colonial intervention.
