Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar and Bardhaman: A Historical Analysis of Education, Social Reform, and Humanitarian Work Dr. Somnath Mishra, SACT, Department of Education, Dashrathi Hazra Memorial College, West Bengal, India | ||
ABSTRACT | ||
Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, one of the foremost figures of
the nineteenth-century Bengal Renaissance, made remarkable contributions in the
fields of education, language reform, social reform, and humanitarian service.
His activities were not confined to Kolkata or greater Bengal alone; rather, he
developed a deep and meaningful association with the district of Bardhaman
during his lifetime.
The present study aims to analyze Vidyasagar’s historical
connection with Bardhaman district, his role in the spread of education, the
promotion of women’s education, the widow remarriage movement, and his broader
humanitarian initiatives. The research is primarily based on historical and
descriptive methodologies, drawing upon biographies, historical documents,
research articles, and contemporary sources.
The findings reveal that Vidyasagar played a crucial role in
expanding education in Bardhaman by establishing several schools, including
girls’ schools, thereby significantly contributing to the advancement of female
education. During his stay in Bardhaman town, he also composed Barnaparichay, a
foundational text in the history of Bengali language education, which continues
to serve as a primary learning tool at the elementary level.
In the domain of social reform, his efforts to promote widow
remarriage and to prevent polygamy played a vital role in bringing about social
change in the Bardhaman region. Furthermore, his humanitarian work during times
of famine and malaria epidemics—providing medical aid and assistance to the
poor—stands as a shining example of his commitment to social welfare.
This study demonstrates that the relationship between
Vidyasagar and Bardhaman carries deep historical and cultural significance,
encompassing education, social reform, literary contribution, and humanitarian
service. | ||
